The Importance of Keeping Pets Well-Hydrated Throughout Summer
When the weather warms up, pet owners should take extra care to provide fresh water for their pets. Extreme heat and dehydration pose serious health risks, and even death, during the warmer months. In order to have a carefree summer with your pet, it is essential that you provide them with unlimited access to clean water.
Water: A Vital Resource
Water is essential for life because it helps keep us from overheating, keeps our internal organs functioning properly, and keeps us hydrated. Delirium, dry mouth, sunken eyes, and rapid breathing are all signs of dehydration, which can result from not drinking enough water.
Preventing Dehydration
If you keep an eye on your pet’s water consumption and provide them access to water both indoors and outside, you can easily prevent dehydration. Due to increased panting and sweating, your pet may need more water than normal if you take it for a walk or run in the heat.
Selective Drinkers
Water quality is an issue that may matter to some dogs. Provide plenty of clean water to encourage your pet to drink. Drinking water may be made more appealing by adding fruit slices, ice cubes, or broth. There’s also the possibility that your pet may prefer flowing water, in which case a pet water fountain would be an excellent addition.
Make sure to get in touch with us right away if you see any signs of dehydration in your pet, such as decreased water consumption. In the case of severe dehydration, veterinary professionals can be of invaluable assistance. A hydration status assessment and possible intravenous (IV) fluid therapy may be performed.
